runover by socks

January 30th, 2007

I have decided over the last few months that I love socks! I mean I was crazy about socks before, but now that I can knit socks they are even better. I have made several pairs, although only 1 has been completed for me, and I can’t stop thinking about what yarn and pattern I want to use next – hence the reason there is only one pair for me done. Below you will see pictures of the ones I have finished so far. Right now I am trying to finish two pairs for myself: Ribbed Cable Socks from Interweave (pattern on their site) and the Fancy Silk Socks from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush. The rib cable socks have 1 lonely sock without the second cast on…I know I’m playing with fire there. The others I have just started in a handpainted (just for me) yarn by Susie Grougan. The colorway is called “Tabitha’s Socks”…I’ll try to show it soon, don’t have time to take a picture just now. It has blues and browns and white and is beautiful. The rib cable socks are in a handpainted yarn off of ebay – a dark pink and brown mix. I hope to finish these two pairs before my first sock kit arrives from Blue Moon Fiber Arts in February. I joined the Rockin’ Sock Club this year and can’t wait to see what the colors and patterns will be!
The pictures below are: My Patons SWS boot socks, Stripey socks for my Mom’s birthday last year, Cowgirl (modified for thinner sock yarn) socks for my MIL from IK winter 2006 & Log Cabin socks from Handknit Holidays for my Mom. You may notice that the socks appear to be hanging off my toes (not the SWS pair)…that is because they are sized for a medium woman’s foot and I will forever be wearing a kids size 3 shoe.

Now it’s time to get the kids up and Kristopher to “school”.

long overdue shawl post

January 26th, 2007

During the blogging break that I took, there was quite a bit of knitting and a little sewing. The two projects that I am most proud of and should definitely be written about are the shawls that I finished. I had purchased a pattern from knitpicks about 6 months ago and fully planned to make it right then for my Nana as a thank you gift for all she has done for me. That pattern was the Adamas shawl by Miriam Felton. You won’t see that completed shawl here though, because it was too hard for a lace beginner like me! I corresponded with Miriam a couple of times trying to figure it out and then gave up and ordered her Seraphim pattern. This one was much easier to get started, since the top was mainly stockinette with yarnovers only on the middle and ends of the rows. I was able to do that for a while, but I really wanted something lacy to wear to my sisters wedding in November (Seraphim was started in September). Now, when the Summer 2006 issue of Interweave came out and I saw Icarus, I didn’t really like it, but after seeing so many completed ones and flipping past it many times, it started to grow on me. I decided that was what I needed for the wedding. So I started it too. Unfortunately I wasn’t going to get finished in time, so the night before we had to leave I did the edging and bind off about 21 rows before it was due. I blocked it the night before the wedding in our hotel room and didn’t get a picture of it blocking. Now it probably needs to be reblocked, because I don’t think it stayed long enough or something. But I wore it and it was lovely. It doesn’t look too bad despite not finishing it properly. No one seems to have gotten a close-up picture of me wearing it, but there is some evidence that I had it on!

So, Icarus was finished in November (the 16th to be exact), but Seraphim has just been finished and shipped to Nana. She received it yesterday and called today to tell me that she loves it. I am so happy that she does, even with it’s imperfections (I won’t call them mistakes, even if that’s what they are). I was hoping to make something that she would appreciate and love and I guess it worked out.

So, the two shawls:

Pattern: Seraphim by Miriam Felton
Yarn: A hand-painted 100% merino laceweight from ebay, in pinks & browns

I am going to try Adamas again, though maybe not soon. I have lots on the needles and some other lacy projects I want to try too. I do love Miriam’s patterns and want to make them all :)

I have updated the gallery for my creations and everything (that I remembered to take a picture of before giving away) is on there. I may write about a few more of the projects another day, but most of the new posts will be about new stuff, I hope!

P.S. I’m having trouble with the pictures right now. Since I switched my theme, everything has been a little messed up and I am waiting (not so patiently) for my husband to help me with some things. It took me 2 days to figure out how to even log into it so I could post, so please be patient with me…

Break’s Over!

January 21st, 2007

Hi Everyone!

I’m back. I’ve had a nice break and have come back ready to redo the blog. I’m sure my past readers have already noticed the theme change (yay!) and I will be changing some other things soon too. I am planning to use this more as a blog instead of just a page to showcase my FO’s, but probably won’t be posting to the family blog. So, if you want news, check here from now on. I’ll post some pictures of things later and the gallery of my handmade things will be updated within the next few days. I have several things from the last 5 months and a few I am very excited to show you!

Also wanted to mention that Kody has a new job, another yay! He will start on the 29th of this month, working for NCR. A great job that came along at the perfect time. It is such a blessing and we are all excited. Kody is a bit nervous about his first day/week and could use some prayer, if you have time :)

Kristopher & Taylor are doing well. I’ll write more about them another time. Have a great day and check back soon for many more updates and changes!
