Taylor’s Naptime Quilt

August 25th, 2009

At preschool, Taylor is required to at least lay down at naptime even though she hasn’t been taking naps for a couple of years now. The have little pull out “cots” that we bring a crib sheet for and then they are allowed to bring a blanket and pillow. Since Taylor is limited in her blanket supply, I decided that I would just make her a quilt to take with her. A few months ago, I got the book “Quilts, Baby!”, by Linda Kopp. It is full of beautiful baby quilts and I want to make many of them. There is a really simple one, especially for a new quilter like me, called Intersection. Here is my version, which is not quite as beautiful as the one in the book, but I love it!

After finishing it I wanted to keep it for myself, but I did send it with Taylor to school today. I actually hadn’t taken a picture of it before we got there, so I was standing out in the parking lot taking pictures of a quilt…other parents will probably think I am the crazy mom! I really hope not though. I just wanted to have a record of it in case something happens to it at school. The main front and back fabric is from the same line, but I can’t remember what it is right now. I also have some of it in a green-y aqua color. The patches are just scraps of what I had around, some favorites and some that just matched nicely. A lot of it came from J Caroline Creative.
While doing this quilt I learned that I like the piecing part of the quilt, but not the actual “quilting”. My next quilts (I have plans for a twin size one for Taylor’s bed and a Queen size one for our bed) will be taken to the Murray Sewing Center so that they can quilt them for me. Their prices are really reasonable for the quilting in my opinion. Much more reasonable than me going insane!

What happens when we run out of paper napkins and moolah?

August 23rd, 2009

So, I have been wanting to convert our family to cloth napkins for a few months now to do my part in not filling the landfills with so much trash. I just could not ever get around to it, even though I had plenty of fabric. I just kept buying the paper ones anyway. Well, this week we ran out of paper napkins and paper towels and I didn’t really want to spend the money on more since it’s a little tight here right now, so I got out the sewing machine and cut up my fabric and made some…27 to be exact. I know I could have bought cloth napkins cheaper, but I wanted handmade pretty ones and I wanted smaller ones. All the ones I’ve bought and seen at the store are huge. That isn’t very practical for my children or for everyday use.

I wanted to have plenty so that we could go at least a day without laundry in there. I also wanted to have lots of different ones so that we could pick out one that suits our mood or is fun for the meal. However they aren’t very manly, so maybe I need to make a few more! Mine are all smaller, think cocktail size, napkins and none are exactly the same size. I am a perfectionist in many things, but I think sewing frees me from that (interestingly enough). I just like to cut and sew and be onto something new. My favorites for the minute are the ivory floral design with polkadot backside and the orange-y toned japanese-y floral ones with white lining.

On the subject of money tightness…
This wouldn’t be an issue if several things were true of this household. a)picky eaters were not present b)we were better stewards of money c)temptations were removed from sight. I may be back later with a post about temptations or a finished quilt – we’ll see! :)

I hope you are all having a lovely Sunday wherever you are! The weather is just beautiful here. We also had a great sermon/lesson/message this morning at church. Fabulous job, Bro. Scott!! Amen and Hallelujah! So far, a wonderful day.

How Awesome is the Lord Most High

August 20th, 2009

This is not the post I was intending to write today, but this song was just really speaking to me this morning as I drove home from dropping Taylor off. Here are the lyrics to Chris Tomlin’s song ‘How Awesome is the Lord Most High’

Great are You, Lord
Mighty in strength
You are faithful
You will ever be

We will praise You
All of our days
It’s for Your glory
We offer everything

Raise your hands, all you nations
Shout to God all creation
How awesome is the Lord most high

Where You send us
God, we will go
You’re the answer
We want the world to know

We will trust You
When You call our name
Where You lead us
We’ll follow all the way

We will praise You together
For now and forever
How awesome is the Lord most high

Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!
How awesome is the Lord most high

I just feel something when I listen to his See the Morning album. Every song on there is beautifully sung for our Lord God. If you get a chance listen to Uncreated One as well. Very good stuff!

As I was listening this morning I started thinking about the message that Bro. Glynn preached last Sunday morning on stewardship. Number 3 of his 5 principles :) is “Life and all good things related to it are gifts from God.” We need to listen to God and be obedient in order to receive these blessings (or at the very least recognize them.) As the song above says “Where you send us, God, we will go”. Are you listening and going? Are you obedient to Him? Are you receiving the blessings that He pours out for you? and Are you being good stewards of the things he has blessed you with?

I know that I don’t always do all of the above, but I want to. I long to be obedient to Him and when I fall short I only want to get back up and try harder to live my life for the One who died for me.

Here are 3 scriptures that he gave us on Sunday as well. Please read them, they are so good!

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? -Romans 8:32

24The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ -Acts 17:24-28

And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. -Phillipians 4:19

-Lord, I will praise you now and forever, for you are Awesome, Lord Most High!-

First & Second Day

August 18th, 2009

Today is Taylor’s first day at preschool. She didn’t cry when I dropped her off, but was very quiet and shy in her class. I hope that she is having fun. Here are a couple of pictures of her ready for school. My little “Gap girl”:)

Kristopher worked on his bible study while I was dropping her off and paying. So after he finished that we had a little recess at the church, since they have a playground and we don’t have a swing set at home. Here are the boys enjoying recess.

Yesterday was a very good first day of school here. Kristopher did well on all his work. The kids did enjoy making their posters and I hung them upstairs on our art rod. We forgot to do our calendar, but we will do it starting tomorrow I hope! The only trouble we had was that Taylor wanted to participate in all the school work too and I didn’t relaly have anything planned for her except the poster activity. I have looked through all the stuff I have though and I have some books and things I can work with her on if she continues to want to do work. I am using Homeschool Tracker to keep track of attendance and grades on extra work (but I’m not going to put all the workbook stuff in there) and I’m keeping track of the things Taylor does too – just for fun. I also have a Mom’s Plan It calendar, just because I really like them, to keep track of my plans and what we actually get done everyday. I am also going to have to come up with a few extra assignments for Kristopher, I think. The curriculum I got is nice, but I’m already seeing areas that are going to need extra things for me to feel good about his education. So far though we are having a very good week:) Hope you are too wherever you are!
