…about public school, is the awards ceremony at the end of the year.
Yesterday, we all went to the awards ceremony at Kristopher’s school, not knowing if he would get anything. Kody was off and it was nice to all be there:) I think Kristopher was surprised to see him too! I really liked getting awards when I was little and I know Kristopher works hard and deserves the ones he has gotten and enjoys them too. I know I can give my own awards next year, but it just won’t be the same as an only student… Anyway, he got several awards from his teacher:
Sight Word Champion - for Excellent work Learning Sight Words
Math Fact Award - for Excellent work on Math Facts
Reading – for outstanding achievement in reading
Language Arts - for outstanding achievement in Spelling, Phonics & Writing
He also got a special award from the librarian, Mrs. Gore, that only 2 first graders recieved: The Captain’s Award - in recognition of outstanding performance in reading and contribution to the Library Lagoon for the 2008-2009 school year
One fun thing isn’t enough to keep him in public school, but it sure was hard sitting there, watching how excited he was to get something and knowing that that won’t be happening next year. This week I’ve been really looking at some curriculum and trying to decide what I want to teach next year. I’m having so much trouble choosing because so many look good. I just don’t want to purchase something that I will end up not liking, or that Kristopher won’t like. So, that’s where we are on school for now:)
The big kids have been really wanting an outdoor playset, as have I. We’re going to have to get something this year. If anyone has any suggestions on a nice set that will last forever, please tell me! They beg constantly to go somewhere that has swings and slides and things to climb on and I would really love to just let them run outside and be there! They do find things to do outside, but this would be extra fun and nice especially when we aren’t playing at the school everyweek like we do now. Anyway, I hope we can actually do this this year. I am pretty sure I know where I want to put such a thing now!
We need several things right now, it seems like. We bought a refrigerator early this week, which isn’t here yet, but we are very excited about. If you will recall this post you will remember that we had to replace a large chunk of the subfloor under the refrigerator before we moved in. We kept the same fridge and thought we had the leak under control, but found this week that our brand new floor has a spot that is soaked through and already needs to be replaced again. So since lowe’s had some good ones on sale we just bought a new one that will not leak! It was supposed to be in on Wednesday, but we haven’t heard from them yet about the delivery time. Hoping it’s today! We’ve also been looking at some bunk beds pretty seriously. Kameron will share the room with Kristopher once he’s big enough (not a year or 2 still) and the room really would be nicer with bunk beds. We’re wanting to get them now so that Taylor can go ahead and have a big girl bed too. She is not wanting to sleep in the toddler bed anymore and says that she likes big beds, not small ones. She really just needs a new bed too, so that her furniture will match, but she may have to use the one Kristopher has been using until we can afford a nice white one. I’d really like to get her a daybed actually…kind of like this one if possible!
Anyway, just a little of me dreaming;)
Phone calls
I want to start out saying that I hope I don’t offend anyone with this post and if I do I’m sorry. I have been told in the past that I sometimes come off a little rough when I say some things. However I just feel the need to vent about this certain subject right now, so here goes…
I just received a phone call from an organization trying to raise money to send 800 children with cancer and their entire family on a “last” vacation. This is 800 of the 120,000 children who will be diagnosed with cancer this year; 40,000 of those will not survive the year. Now, I feel terrible for the families and for the children having to endure these battles. I pray for them and I hope for a cure or at the very least salvation and comfort from Jesus while they go through this. But, I think that raising money to send them on vacation is slightly ridiculous. First of all, I doubt very seriously that that is the first thing on any of their minds and while a fun vacation might press things to the back for a minute – IT’S STILL HAPPENING! Second, why aren’t these people raising money for something that might actually help the kids or their parents with what’s going on in real life? Thirdly, we don’t even have money to take our own kids on a vacation (they’ve NEVER been on one) and some weeks we struggle with getting our bills paid. If I was going to try to find some money to do anything regarding a vacation I would first try to take my own family on one – however small it might end up – because NO ONE’s life is certain. God might bless some of these families with the children battling cancer and they could live. Someone in my own family might die tomorrow and they’ve never gotten to do anything like what this organization is asking 5 person families on a low income to try to accomplish. I do make donations to things I believe in and I pray and I help with as much in my community as I can give my time to, but I will not help with something that I feel is not necessary.
I just think if you are going to have an organization that claims to be for helping people that you find some way to actually help them. Sending 800 of 120,000 on a fancy vacation so they can forget about what’s going on for a week seems really silly. If I were in the situation and someone offered me money to help find a cure or money to help pay my child’s bills or someway that my child could stay at home while having treatments done, I would feel blessed and thankful – being offered a vacation (or a chance to win one or whatever they’re doing) would seem like a painful jab.

I hope all the mommies out there had a nice Mother’s Day! We went to church and then I got to relax some, while Kody and the kids took care of things around the house. It was a nice day spent with the people I love!
Here are some cards I made for the day (and some leftover for another day!) I also finally made the replacement purse for my mom that I started gathering supplies for a year ago, at least. I hope she likes it and that maybe it won’t wear out as quickly since I used suede instead of quilting cotton. It is the same shape as the last one I made her, since she said that’s a good shape. I found the fabric panel with the horses on ebay and the suede is leftover upholstry fabric from when I redid our kitchen chairs. The inside is lined with maroon cotton. I always have trouble picking out a lining fabric that looks good.
Card template found here.
We have a busy evening ahead with Taylor’s soccer game and Kristopher’s last cub scout meeting for the year. I am ready for summer and a little bit of a break. I’m not sure that summer is when I get one though!! Ha! We’ve got one or two trips planned and summer reading at the library and TNT at church and VBS (I hope!) and scout day camp and homeschool preparations! Doesn’t sound like much of a break to me… I’m sure we will have fun though:)
I hope everyone has a safe and good week!

1. I have completed day 9 of the 30 day shred…thinking about moving on to level 2 either tomorrow or Friday:) I hear it just about kills you all over again when you switch levels, so please be thinking of me!
2. Yesterday I planted some Hostas that I got from Beans to Blossoms. I love Beans to Blossoms! It is a local farm that until this year was doing the co-op that we were a part of. We paid so much at the beginning and middle of the year and they grew the food and we picked some up every week. This year they have decided to concentrate on their on site store and the farmer’s market which I understand and appreciate. I went out last week to buy some mesclun, spinach and radishes and perused the plants. They have so many beautiful ones – so please, if you haven’t bought yours yet, support your local growers!! I am planning to go back for some vegetable plants soon too. We still need to figure out where we’re going to put our few things that we want to grow ourselves this year. I also planted some marigolds. Those are one of my favorite “outside flowers”. I don’t know why I think of them like that, but I do!
(I am not a master gardener or anything;) so I know that my flower beds don’t look all pretty like some people’s. I would have liked for someone who knows what they are doing to come help me, but alas they did not, so my work will have to do!)
3. Bugmaster’s came out this morning and checked for termites and sprayed around the outside of the house. I thought that usually when your house was sprayed for bugs it smelled really bad, but it isn’t bother us so far. Maybe it’s another kind of bug spray that smells… Before we bought the house an annual contract was set up with them. I’m glad because that is one less thing for me to figure out.
4. Left on the day’s agenda is taking Kristopher to another dentist for a second opinion on his tooth. He hurt it when he was 2 (falling into a door frame because he was running in the hallway and not looking) and it never came in right. Our normal dentist told us that his baby tooth had fallen out and that now his permanent tooth was coming in. This cannot be true because he or I would have noticed his baby tooth falling out and it hasn’t and the tooth is dissapearing back into the gums instead of growing in…so hopefully this dentist will figure out what is really going on there. I just hope it isn’t going to be something painful for Kristopher – he is pretty wimpy with pain, needles, blood, etc., as in he gets hysterical. Please pray for him if you think about it! (and pray for his mama;))
5. I still have to clean up the office too and then go to Church tonight for Women’s worship. I am hoping that Kody will go too for Baptist Men’s night. Maybe he’ll get home early tonight! Hope you all have a great rest of the day!
