Sock Yarn Inventory

March 25th, 2007

I decided to have a little fun today and got out all the sock yarn to take inventory. I don’t have as big a stash as so many out there, but I have plenty to knit socks from! So, here’s what I have right now:

Knitpicks Memories: 100% merino, Redwood Forest
Socks That Rock – mediumweight: Monsoon (2007 club color), 100% superwash merino – this is what I am currently working on :)

The following are some sock yarns that I would like to try in the future and I picked out some colors that I really like in each. I’m sure that there are others that I would like, but these are just some that I have seen and really want to use next!

Knitting Notions Online: Roses ‘n Thyme
Mountain Colors Bearfoot: Steelhead, Indian Corn, Moon Dance, Northern Lights
Lavender Sheep: Sea Turtle, Dark Chocolate Raspberry, Mountain Sunrise
Socks That Rock: Footzey Foo, January One, Pink Granite, Blue Moonstone (in Seduction)

The little red bag with the sheep on it is what I am keeping my current sock project in (when it isn’t lying around daring the children to take the needles out), but was to hold all my knitting when I was little. These bags were gifts from my Nana and I am pretty sure that at least one of my sisters also has one (if not both). I found it when my mom was moving and we went through her house to find our things and I am glad to have something so cute to use to hold my socks!

Finished Pinwheel and WIPs

March 23rd, 2007

I know I said that the Pinwheel sweater was going to be finished by Tuesday, but I just finished it this morning. The icord edging took a lot longer than I planned and then the sleeves were just too boring, when I wanted to start my sock club sock! But the sweater is finished and it looks very cute. I didn’t block it, but Taylor did wear it for a few minutes this morning at Mom’s group since the building was chilly. It is a very warm sweater though and she got hot fast with it on. I really like it and I hope that it fits perfectly in the fall (I know it is a “grow with me sweater” but I think it will probably be too tight by the time she is 4.)
So, here it is:

psw1 psw2

Pattern: Pinwheel Sweater from elann.com
Yarn: elann.com Peruvian Highland Wool in Natural, Celery, Oregano, Antique Rose, Salmon, Warm Tan, & Mocha Cream
Needles: Size US 9 bamboo dpns from ebay, Size US 9 Clover bamboo 29″ circulars, size US 7 bamboo dpns from ebay, size US 8 Clover dpns

Modifications: I made the sleeves and inch and a half shorter since I don’t think Taylor will wear it when she needs the 12″ length. I also did the i-cord edging in salmon instead of the last pinwheel color because I wanted more pink in the sweater:) If I made the sweater again I would probably not make the ribbing go so far up on the sleeves since it doesn’t look that nice. I like that the sleeves can fold up for a smaller baby, but I would start the 1×1 about 2 inches lower and maybe add in another decrease before it starts. I probably will make at least one more of these since the sweater is easy to do, and then I’ll get to choose some more fun colors!

sockHere is my sock for the Rockin’ Sock Club. Knit with STR mediumweight in the Monsoon colorway (February’s club kit color). I was on the fence about what pattern to do, but I decided just to go with the Inside Out patter that came with the kit. I don’t know how I will like the ribbing on the bottom of my foot, but I do want to try new things with the others in the club. This is my first toe up sock and so far it hasn’t been too bad. I did have a lot of trouble with the crochet chain, since I don’t really understand how to do one and then it didn’t unzip how it was supposed to so it took me forever just to get it out of my sock. But the actual knitting so far has been easy. I hope to be working on these a lot so they will get done before the next kit arrives in April.

vestThe last new project is the Vestee from the Spring 2007 issue of knitty. I think it will be a really cute sweater for Taylor to wear during the spring, summer and fall and maybe even winter over longs sleeves. I hope it works out right for me. I am using Quecha from elann in colony blue. I had trouble deciding what to start with it. I have 4 balls and the choices were Vestee, Briar Rose or the cabled jumper from knitspot.com. I want to make all three and I decided that she needed the short sleeved one now and the others could be knit later in the summer for winter use. I really love the color and can’t wait to have it finished now that I have cast on!

That’s all the knitting news here. We have a soccer game tomorrow unless it is raining. It doesn’t look like it is going to, but it was supposed to last night and today so who knows. We are all doing well and have had a really great day today. I hope you all are as well :) Bye bye!

I am Bamboo

March 19th, 2007

I took this quiz and found out that I am bamboo needles. How nice :)

What kind of knitting needles are you?

You are bamboo.Warm, cozy, and thoughtful, you take your time and enjoy how things feel, smell, and taste. You love the craft and beauty of traditional things, and you value the comfort and experience of knitting as much as the results. But while you are reveling in your warm cozies, don’t get stuck. Warm is wonderful, but so is the whole wide world!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

March 17th, 2007

Just wanted to post a quick update on the pinwheel sweater…

sweater1

I went to Paducah to get circular needles, since I couldn’t wait long enough to order some. Clover bamboo 29″ US9s are perfect for sweater knitting :) The two other balls of yarn in the picture are the last two colors to be added to the sweater and then I have to knit the sleeves (in the dark pink color) on and then it will be finished. Only 30 more rows plus the loopy edging and sleeves! I can’t believe how fast this sweater is to knit. I may make millions…or at least one more!

Hope everyone had a Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I forgot about it until I noticed that people sure were wearing a lot of green today…

Round Two

March 16th, 2007

Well, here we are on night number five of round two… Kody has been back in Dayton since Sunday night for more training and the kids and I have been trying to keep busy so as not to get lonely. I have been doing some knitting which I will show below. We’ve been doing our normal “sickwithwhoknowswhat” routine and making fun trips to the doctor. This time it really is nothing though, just a silly Mommy and maybe a bit of asthma/allergies. Kristopher had his first Spring soccer practice on Tuesday which he was really looking forward to. Unfortunately he spent most of it goofing off and I don’t know if he knows anything the coach said. Hopefully the first game will go better than the practice…it’s tomorrow morning out in the cold. Last night we registered Kristopher for Kindergarten, which was fun for all! I didn’t even know about the time until yesterday afternoon, so I am glad I found out and that we were able to go. Kristopher enjoyed seeing the school and wants to go back now instead of waiting for August. The first day here is August 7. That seems really early to me, but I guess things are a little different than when I was in school. I signed up to be a volunteer (they have to do background checks now, which I think is really great!) and we got to meet the three Kindergarten teachers and see the classrooms and all. Everyone there seemed really nice and we are all looking forward to finding out who his teacher is and going back. I just love it when things go well! Taylor and I have had a rough fighting back and forth week with her screaming all the time and telling me no and me being very exasperated because I have no idea what is wrong…well, I think I figured it out tonight. She either hates her mommy or she is in pain because of that little tooth I found poking through the gums. I am really hoping for the latter;) I think though that most of the “no” and “uh-unh” and hiding things behind her back is that she is getting close to two and wants to share her opinion. The only problem with that is that she thinks “uh-unh” means yes and no (you can imagine how it would be difficult for me to guess which one she means)! But, I’m sure we’ll get past this. I just hope that we can get through without drawing too much attention to ourselves in public.

Now for the knitting, because we all know that’s why you’re here! First I finished the Broken Cable Rib Socks. The pattern is by Ann Budd and I think it can be found on Interweave’s website. It is from the Summer 2005 Issue of Knits. The yarn is some I bought off ebay, but I just found last night that the seller has an etsy shop as well (which I am very excited about). You can find her here. I am going to call these my cinnamon socks, because the colors remind me of cinnamon sticks and of the cinnamon discs. I have worn them all day and I think they are going to be my favorite socks! Aren’t they beautiful?

Next, I got my first sock kit and binder from Blue Moon Fiber Arts on Monday, so here’s a picture of it. I am excited to be in the club, but am not sure what I am going to do with this yarn yet. The pattern that came with this month’s kit is nice looking, but it seems like so many of the club’s members are having trouble with it. We’ll have to see if I am brave enough..if not, I guess I will just do another pattern with this month’s yarn or save it until later to decide.

Last is the pinwheel sweater I started this afternoon for Taylor. I am using the elann Peruvian Highland Wool and it is going by so quickly. You will notice that I have a lot of stitches on double pointed needles. This is not on purpose (even though I despise circulars); when I went to get the US size 9 ciruclar tips out I remembered that I don’t have any size 9s. So I either have to drive to Paducah tomorrow and buy some, order some online and wait or finish the sweater on double points. I don’t know how big of a hurry I’m in, but it seems like the sweater really wants to be finished.

I think that’s all I have for tonight. Hope you are all having a great week :) Think warm thoughts and pray for my sanity tomorrow while I go pretend to be super soccer mom!
